A 12-year old girl named Alexis Bortell who lives in Colorado is suing the United States Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, over the federal prohibition of medical marijuana.

The lawsuit also includes another child, former Denver Broncos football player Marvin Washington, and military veteran, and a marijuana advocacy group.

Bortell and her parents had moved from Texas to Colorado for legal marijuana due to her battle with epilepsy.

According to the girl, traditional medicine in Texas did little to help her condition and the seizures. KDVR reported that some doctors even recommended she get brain surgery.

In response to medicinal marijuana, Bortell said, “I’d say it`s a lot better than brain surgery.”

“I would like to be able to visit my grandparents without risking being taken to a foster home,” Bortell responded when asked why she was in the lawsuit.

Her father exclaimed, “How is that rationale? It’s not compassionate either, but rationality? It’s just outrageous,” speaking about the drug being classified more dangerous than Schedule II narcotics such as cocaine, and methamphetamine.

“When you look at it from a distance and you see it saving their lives, me as a father and an American, I go, what are we doing? How could you possibly look at someone who`s benefiting from this as a medicine and threaten to take it away?,” he asked.
