On Monday marijuana legislation will take effect in California, allowing recreational marijuana to be purchased and sold legally.

While many Californians are waiting for the day, only 42 retail licenses have been issued in the entire state. There’s also 150 applications that are pending.

Big cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco will not have recreational pot shops open on Monday due to late approval of local regulations.

Cities such as San Diego, Palm Springs, and Santa Cruz do have licenses and will be some of the first cities to sell.

The Palm Springs area had nine of the state’s first retail licenses while San Diego had eight. Santa Cruz and San Jose had four each, and others were issued around the Bay Area and the state’s northern reaches.
