Many people may not know that Queen Elizabeth is the current Canadian monarch and has reigned since 6 February 1952.

Despite Canada’s Senate and House of Commons both passing the Marijuana bill this month that would allow recreational marijuana to be legal in the country, the bill still needed Queen Elizabeth’s blessing.

According to the Queen’s representative in Canada, Governor General Julie Payette has officially given the Queen’s assent to the bill.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau then announced this week that recreational marijuana will officially become legal in Canada on Oct. 17, 2018.
