This week California’s Department of Cannabis Control recalled a batch of packaged cannabis flower contaminated with black mold.

Those who purchased Claybourne Co. “Head Banger” flower between Nov. 2, 2021, and Jan. 26, 2022, are urged to check their packaging for the UID and batch numbers and dispose of the flower if it matches, said the department.

The recall affects one batch of the flower that was sold in various size jars. The UID number was: “1A406030000326B000094476” and the batch number was: “28090621HB.”

The department has said that the flower was found to be contaminated with Aspergillus niger, a type of fungus commonly known as black mold.

Most people breathe in Aspergillus spores every day without getting sick; however, people with weakened immune systems or lung diseases are at a higher risk of developing health problems due to it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The contamination was found during independent testing through the DCC’s cannabis testing laboratory.

The DCC said it has notified all cannabis retailers and distributors with affected product in their inventory. The licensees are required to immediately quarantine the product and are prohibited from selling it, the DCC said
