Sales of cannabis in the state of Illinois soared 15% in December to end the first year of sales at $669 million.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation released net cannabis revenue from adult-use sales for December with monthly sales reaching $86.86 million. This is up 15% from November.

For the first full year of the state’s program, 26% of sales were to customers visiting from out of state. Adult-use sales improved by 23% in the fourth quarter over the third quarter.

Medical cannabis sales have not been updated yet for December but through November, the year-to-date sales were $331 million. This means that the state’s total cannabis sales for 2020 will exceed $1 billion.

State officials are reporting at least $1,000,308,800 in total sales from medical and recreational marijuana purchases over the course of the year.

Almost 1.9 million recreational cannabis products were sold in December, with more than a quarter of purchases being made by out-of-state residents. Altogether, Illinois sold 14,485,704 adult-use marijuana products in 2020.

Illinois Governor Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) had recently announced more than 500,000 expungements and pardons for people with low-level marijuana offenses on their records.

He had also granted an earlier round of more than 11,000 pardons for cannabis-related convictions prior to the implementation of the market.
