This week the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission has appointed a new executive director.
William Tilburg was given the position after serving as its acting director for several months. As part of his new job, Tilburg will continue to oversee day-to-day operations for the commission and its 60-plus staffers, and will advise its 13 commissioners on federal and state regulations and laws impacting Maryland’s cannabis industry, per a release.
According to a news release, the commission wrote that Tilburg had been serving as the acting executive director since 2019 and previously served as its director of government affairs and policy.
Tilburg replaces Joy A. Strand, who resigned from the commission in September.
A release said commissioners believe “Tilburg’s experience will provide a level of consistency essential to the Commission’s continuing operations” amid those changes.
Maryland’s regulated cannabis market includes 17 licensed growers, 18 processors and nearly 90 dispensaries, per the commission’s website.
