Voters will take to the polls this November to vote if Michigan should legalize recreational marijuana.

If residents choose to vote it legal, the state could have some of the lowest tax rates in the country on the drug.

Residents will be voting for a proposal that would allow legal recreational marijuana for those who are 21 and older.

The proposal calls for a 10% excise tax on the sale price and standard state sales tax of 6%.

Josh Hovey, spokesman for the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol commented, “We didn’t want to be the highest in the country. Where we sit with the rest of the country is a good thing.”

“It’s not a huge tax, but it’s significant,” remarked Matthew Abel, a senior partner at Cannabis Counsel in Detroit. He is also the executive director of the Michigan chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

“The argument against taxing the hell out of (recreational marijuana) and making the tax as high was we could is that having a lower tax encourages people to shop in the legal marketplace as opposed to staying in the illegal market,” Abel also added.
