According to a new study from this year, California’s millennials aged 18-29 are wanting cannabis over alcohol.
The study was conducted by a Southern California based cannabis company named OutCo and was done in partnership with Monocle Research. According to the study, over 50% of these millennials in the golden state are opting for cannabis instead of alcohol.
OutCo CEO, Lincoln Fish remarked, “We found that for millennials, the choice between the two main recreational substances, alcohol and tobacco, has always been an easy one. Growing up with anti-tobacco messaging, the smoking rate for 18-29 year olds in the U.S. has dropped by 22% over the past decade, leaving alcohol as the substance of choice.”
“But we are already seeing a decrease in alcohol sales, which means that cannabis is poised to be the new recreational substance of choice for many millennials and beyond.”
The study found that the most popular substitution was choosing marijuana over beer as 34% of millennials said they prefer cannabis over it. 18% of millennials in the state opted for cannabis over wine while 14% chose the drug over spirits.
One factor sited by millennials for the substitution is health. According to the particpants in the study, the effects of a hangover from alcohol was harder than overindulging on marijuana.
