A referendum is set for the year 2020 in New Zealand, on whether recreational marijuana should become legal or not.

Andrew Little, justice minister of the country recently made the announcement. If the referendum happens, it would put the issue to a nationwide vote and make the country the first country to do so.

Little said that the referendum would be on the ballot during the next national election, due to be held in 2020. He told reporters that there was still “a bit of detail still to work through.”

Recently the country’s Parliament had passed a law that eased the restriction son medicinal marijuana.
