Hemp Leaders Look Ahead to 2022

Compiled by Jean Lotus

As 2021 comes to a close, we recognize it was a year of both struggles and progress in the hemp industry. We asked our hemp heroes and heroines – top business and policy experts in the hemp sphere – to provide their unvarnished predictions for 2022.

What are the challenges and opportunities the new year will bring? Below are responses (some edited for clarity and length.)

Alexis Harris: CEO, Harris and Associates LLC
Whether it’s ancillary services, agritourism or special events– to end product production, The possibilities within this industry are infinite. Challenges are educational barriers across networks. Lawmakers and elected officials need education, doctors need education, transportation and logistics operations need education. Existing policies and practices have to be reexamined and restructured; and this must happen from a place of understanding versus ignorance.

Kentucky Hemp Industry Responds to Deadly Tornadoes

The hemp community in Kentucky has rallied around the farmers, businesses and researchers affected by devastating tornadoes that swept through western Kentucky and southern Illinois last week.

December tornadoes caused at least 76 deaths and destroyed at least 1,000 properties, including the destruction of agricultural research centers at the University of Kentucky’s Princeton campus in Caldwell County that housed some of the university’s hemp research.

Trace Wants to Make the First Hemp and Regenerative Cotton Tampon and We Need Your Help!
The world is ready for hemp fiber products, and we all know it! But the CEOs, the manufacturers, the research and development teams, and the “big dogs” at the heads of companies need to see numbers supporting this if they are going to invest in innovative hemp products. Please help the advancement of hemp fiber within the hygiene and period care industry by filling out this survey, offered by Trace Femcare, Inc., making the first hemp and regenerative Climate Beneficial (TM) cotton tampon. Save Ti & His 329 Rights
If you or a loved one are a medical cannabis patient, this affects you. Ti is an autistic 15 year old who was abruptly removed from his mother/medical caregiver on June 3, 2021 by Child Welfare Services in Hawaii. This GoFundMe has been set up to pay for his legal fees needed to promptly dismiss the CWS case and enforce their civil and medical rights to have access to his medical professionals to participate in providing for his medical needs. Any donation no matter how big or small means we are that much closer to getting Ti back.

Support H.R. 841, The Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act
In September 2020, U.S. Reps. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Morgan Griffith (R-VA) introduced the Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act – a bill which would provide a clear legal pathway for the sale of hemp extracts like CBD, while ensuring that products must comply with the rigorous regulatory framework existing for dietary supplements. The bill garnered broad bi-partisan support. On Feb. 7, 2021, Reps. Schrader and Griffith and 17 of their colleagues reintroduced the bill as H.R. 841. Support passage of the bill here.

Urge Your Members of Congress to Support Our Troops’ Access to CBD
On July 20, 2020, the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to allow service members to use products containing hemp, including CBD. Unfortunately, the amendment was not included in the Senate’s version of the NDAA, which passed on July 23, and was not included in the final bill. However, as a new Congress meets this year, they are hoping for another hearing. Learn more.

Sign the 1% Hemp Petition
The 2018 Farm Bill authorized hemp production but used an outdated definition of hemp that does not work for farmers or the hemp industry. The current definition limiting hemp to 0.3% THC has proven unworkable, forcing many farmers to destroy their crops. Congress must change the definition of hemp to allow up to 1% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) so that farmers can grow hemp without fearing that they will later have to destroy them. Add your name to the Vote Hemp petition urging Congress to redefine hemp as up to 1% THC.
