NoCo9 Kicks Off at The Broadmoor Resort Newly Renovated to Include Green Initiatives

The 9th annual NoCo Hemp Expo, the world’s most comprehensive hemp business conference and trade show, kicked off with the Tree Free Hemp Charity Golf Challenge, a 10-hole golf tournament, on Tuesday March 28. Players followed a special format as they enjoyed the outing at the newly renovated Broadmoor Resort.

The golf courses are just one part of the historic Broadmoor that has been completely overhauled with green initiatives in mind. The courses have been redesigned to be certified Audubon Sanctuaries, after a stringent process that requires restoration of native bird and wildlife habitats. Over 50 acres of highly maintained turf grass have been replaced with native varieties of grasses and wildflowers. Irrigation and water reduction measures have been updated.

NoCo9 Speaker Spotlight Series

A Q&A with Mary Jane Oatman, executive director of the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association, who spoke with Let’s Talk Hemp from the ancestral homelands of her people on the Nez Perce Reservation in Idaho.

By Elizabeth Lunt

Tell us about the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association (ICIA)

It is a 501(c)6 and we focus on networking and mentorship, education and advocacy to advance the opportunities for Native American tribes to add hemp and cannabis farming and businesses to their portfolios. We believe the best way to accomplish our goals is through partnerships. Business planning for hemp development is difficult for tribal communities to execute, so we align with other groups like Global Hemp Association and U.S. Hemp Roundtable, among others, who provide these services.

Negative stigma is still a huge issue in the emerging industry. People are sitting on the fence waiting for others to move forward. We are excited to show tribal communities successful processing facilities.

Help Rebuild Ukraine With Hemp
Sergiy Kovalenkov, aka Doctor Hemphouse, one of the world’s renowned specialists in building with hemp, is appealing to the hemp industry for help in rebuilding war-torn Ukraine, including building Ukraine’s biggest social housing project to date — a 10,000-square-foot residential building to house refugees and orphans who lost their parents to the war. In particular, the project is seeking builders, sponsors, automated block-making machinery and a hempcrete spraying system.
