Whats the Difference Between CBD Gummies and Hemp Gummies? by Jessica Rosslee at CBD Origin

So you’re shopping for gummies, and you’ve come across some that say “hemp gummies” and others that say “CBD gummies.” It can all get pretty confusing, especially if you’re new to the world of CBD.

But don’t worry! I’ve got your back. Here’s what you need to know about hemp gummies vs.

CBD gummies—and whether there even is a difference between the two.

Quick Look: The Lowdown

Can’t figure out which gummies you need? Let’s break it down.

Hemp gummies are made from hemp oil, which means they have non-detectable amounts of THC. They won’t get you high, and they’re legal in every state. These are great if you just want to get the benefits of CBD without any psychoactive effects.

On the other hand, CBD gummies contain CBD extracted from the marijuana plant. While these gummies will contain some THC (usually less than 0.3% but sometimes more), they can still be legal in states that have fully legalized cannabis for recreational use (such as Colorado).

The Major Differences

  • Hemp gummies are made exclusively from hemp, whereas CBD gummies are made with CBD extract from either hemp or marijuana. To be fair, most CBD gummies are made using hemp – but never take that as a blanket statement and always make sure before you commit to purchasing.
  • Hemp gummies have non-detectable levels of THC, pretty much zero, whereas CBD gummies could have varying levels of THC

So depending on your mood or needs, you may prefer one over the other!

Hemp Gummies vs. CBD Gummies — What’s the Difference?

Cannabis has been getting more and more popular in recent years, and for a good reason! It’s a great way to help you loosen up, get some sleep, or get your creative juices flowing. But with so many different products on the market (and with the legal status of cannabis in flux), it can be hard to know if what you’re buying is what you want or need.

I get a lot, one question is “What’s the difference between hemp gummies and CBD gummies?” While they might seem similar, they are actually quite different! Let’s look at each one separately:

Hemp gummies and CBD gummies are similar, but there’s actually a difference between the two. They’re both parts of the same plant family. Still, hemp is a legal variety of cannabis, and CBD is a non-psychoactive compound from hemp flowers and leaves. To use CBD legally, it must be extracted from hemp.

On the other hand, CBD gummies can be made using either marijuana or hemp. If they’re made using marijuana or have more than 0.3% THC in them, they’ll also contain some THC and will make you feel high if you take enough of them.

If a gummy is made solely from hemp, there is a strong chance it was made using extracted oil from the hemp seeds. If this is the case, then it will not contain any cannabinoids. If the label states “hemp CBD,” then the gummies have been made with extraction from leaves from the hemp plant and will contain cannabinoids and terpenes.

Hemp vs. CBD

As the CBD industry explodes, it gets harder and harder to sift through the endless products on the market. So what’s a shopper to do?

If you’re looking for gummies that contain CBD, there are some simple ways to ensure that what you’re getting is legit. A great place to start is the ingredient list. If it says “hemp oil” or “hemp seed oil,” don’t buy it. These ingredients are not the same as CBD oil. And while hemp oil and hempseed oil are both made from parts of the cannabis plant, they don’t contain CBD. Hemp seed oil was definitely not created with the intention of getting high—it was manufactured for skincare products. Back in the day (before 2018), people commonly used hemp seed oil in place of olive oil in cooking. It even came in spray form as an alternative to butter. It wasn’t until

Congress passed the Farm Bill (officially known as the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018)

that things changed. The Farm Bill was designed to help farmers by legalizing industrial hemp (a type of cannabis plant) for use in agriculture. Basically, this meant that anyone could now grow hemp without being charged with a crime.

For a gummy to be considered “CBD,” it must contain CBD oil. Using hempseed oil, you can make a gummy, but that doesn’t make it CBD!

Some companies try to get around the expense of actual CBD by using cheap hempseed oil instead. But since they can’t just come out and say they’re using hempseed oil because then people wouldn’t buy them, they try to trick you into thinking their gummies are legitimate.

One way is by only listing the ingredients as “hemp extract,” not explaining what type of extract (CBD or otherwise) is actually in the product. They also tend to use ambiguous language like “pure hemp extract,” which means nothing.

If you pay attention, though, it should be easy to spot these companies.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a substance derived from cannabis. It’s nonintoxicating and thought to have some health benefits, which is why it’s now being sold in a variety of products, including gummies.

But not all CBD gummies are created equal. Some products contain CBD oil, while others are made with hempseed oil, which is extracted only from the seeds of hemp plants. (Hempseed oil doesn’t contain CBD.)

If you want to try CBD gummies, check the ingredients list carefully to ensure you’re getting the real deal and not just regular gummies laced with hempseed oil.

Top Tips

If you’re looking to try CBD gummies, be on the lookout for the following:

  • Make sure the product contains CBD oil, not hempseed oil.
  • Check the ingredients list to see if the product contains any artificial coloring or flavoring.
  • Look for gummies that are low in sugar and high in fiber.
  • Avoid products that don’t disclose where their CBD is sourced from.

Hemp vs. Marijuana

Marijuana PLANT

Now, why don’t we talk about the difference between hemp and what’s commonly referred to as marijuana or weed?

The terms “hemp” and “marijuana” are often used interchangeably, which can be confusing. While the two plants are related, they have distinct differences. Here’s a definition of each one:

A Quick Look

Hemp is legal in all 50 states, while CBD derived from marijuana can only be sold in states where marijuana is legal. Hemp and marijuana plants are also different, genetically speaking. The primary way to tell them apart is by the amount of THC they contain—marijuana plants have more than 0.3% THC, which makes them psychoactive. Hemp plants have less than 0.3% THC and are used for making many industrial products like paper, clothing, and food (like hemp gummies). Because hemp gummies are made from hemp, they do not contain any THC.

Hemp

Hemp is a plant, not a drug.

There’s a lot of confusion around hemp. People often use the terms interchangeably, but they’re actually very different. Let’s clear up the confusion.

In the United States, the word “hemp” has often been used interchangeably with marijuana. This confusion is understandable because both plants look similar and come from the same species—cannabis sativa.

However, hemp and marijuana are not one and the same. Hemp is a type of cannabis sativa with very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This psychoactive compound gives marijuana users a “high” feeling.

The use of marijuana (cannabis sativa) is illegal in many states, and some people are understandably confused by why hemp is legal when marijuana is not. However, they are different plants with different uses. Marijuana is used for its THC content, which can cause psychoactive effects—and it’s illegal in most states. On the other hand, Hemp contains only trace amounts of THC and can be used to make products like rope, clothing, paper—even food products like hemp milk and hemp butter!

Hemp also contains more cannabidiol (CBD), which is believed to have significant health benefits. Simply put: Hemp is not the same as marijuana; it does not have hallucinogenic properties. Hemp products can be used for various purposes and are generally considered safe to use by those who do not have allergies or sensitivities.

Marijuana

The word “weed” is thrown around a lot these days, but not everyone knows the difference between marijuana and hemp. Let’s start by getting to know hemp. Hemp is a variety of cannabis sativa, commonly known as “marijuana.” Hemp is grown for its fibers, which are used to produce rope, cloth, paper, and many other items. Manufacturers can also press it into oil for use in candles and soaps. Hemp is typically grown without chemical pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers that pollute waterways and drinking water sources. It’s also resistant to weed-pulling pests like whiteflies and aphids. Hemp has a long history in the United States. It dates back to the 1600s when it was introduced by British colonists who believed it could be harvested to produce linen and rope. Until 1937, the federal government outlawed marijuana due to pressure from groups such as the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN), led by Harry J. Anslinger, who targeted minorities using racial undertones (Anslinger was an advocate for anti-immigration laws). The FBN claimed marijuana caused users to become violent and lazy.

We’re not here to argue about what the FBN said or did nearly a century ago. Times have changed, and people have wisened up (for the most part). The truth is, marijuana can make some people feel lazy- but we have learnt that it shouldn’t be a general statement- because some types of marijuana can have the opposite effects. It’s all in the strain.

But getting back to gummies, does this mean that all gummies that don’t contain THC are made from hemp?

Certainly not.

I know it seems confusing- but hang in there. I can explain.

You see, there are varying strains of marijuana, some with higher levels of different cannabinoids (THC< CBD, etc.) than others. And then, you get the clever men and women in white coats that know how to make “broad spectrum” and “ful spectrum” CBD products. These products have either had the CBD cannabinoid isolated and extracted or contain trace amounts of THC while still maintaining the complete cannabinoid and terpene profile.

So how do you know if your product will contain THC? Well, look for the labeling. If it says “THC free,” then you are good to go. However, don’t just rely on the label. I strongly encourage you to look at the third-party lab reports so you can see for yourself exactly how much of what cannabinoid is in the product.

Hemp vs. CBD Effects

What’s the deal with CBD gummies?

There’s a lot of buzz around CBD these days, and if you’re like us, you’re wondering exactly what all the commotion is about.

CBD gummies are the best of both worlds. They’re just like regular gummies, but they contain CBD, a chemical extracted from hemp.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound found in hemp plants with some pretty fantastic health benefits. It doesn’t contain THC (the compound that gets you high when you smoke marijuana), so it isn’t psychoactive and won’t give you a “high.” It also doesn’t interact with any other medications you may be taking or cause side effects or addiction in the same way that prescription medication can. Plus, CBD has been shown to treat chronic pain, nausea, anxiety, and depression in some people.

According to research on CBD, it also seems to help with sleep disorders and reduce inflammation. It may even have the potential to help with skin conditions like acne or psoriasis because of its anti-inflammatory effect.

And they won’t get you high.

Hemp gummies don’t have the same effects as CBD gummies, though. And hempseed oil doesn’t provide the same benefits as CBD gummies because it doesn’t contain CBD or THC.

So What are Hemp Gummies Exactly?

cbd gummies

First off, they’re made of hempseed extract instead of CBD or THC. Some people use

hempseed oil to treat acne or psoriasis because of its anti-inflammatory effect. It’s also a great source of protein, fiber, and micronutrients like zinc and magnesium. So it has some health benefits, but we wouldn’t call it a miracle product by any means.

Hemp gummies aren’t made from CBD or THC, but they may still help you with a few issues. Let’s take a look at the research and see what’s up.

Hemp Gummies: What Are They and How Do They Work?

You can find hemp gummies in most health stores. Some are even shaped like little pumpkins, which is really cute. These chewy candies are made from hempseed oil and might be helpful for specific medical conditions. But don’t expect them to do anything to ease anxiety or insomnia.

What Is Hempseed Oil?

Hemp is a plant that has been used for thousands of years for its versatile fibers, seeds, and oil. The majority of the hemp we use today is grown in Canada, China, and Europe. Under certain circumstances, it’s also legal in the United States; the 2014 Farm Bill permits states to grow hemp as part of pilot programs in select universities.

Hemp gummies don’t produce the same effects as CBD or THC-containing products because they contain no active ingredients. They also don’t help with anxiety, insomnia, or pain relief. So why do people buy them? They might not help with anxiety or pain management, but they do have an anti-inflammatory effect. They’re also pretty nutritious! That said, you shouldn’t expect hemp seed oil to help with skin conditions like acne or psoriasis. It will likely just give you a healthy dose of Omega 3s and some protein!

Hemp seed oil has some perks: it has an anti-inflammatory effect that can reduce pain and swelling. It can help with skin conditions like acne or psoriasis because it has antibacterial properties. It’s also pretty nutritious, so don’t knock ’em til you try ’em! But at the end of the day, hempseed oil just isn’t going to quiet down anxious thoughts or help you sleep soundly through the night.

Pros and Cons of Hemp Seed Oil Gummies

When it comes to hempseed oil, you might assume that it’s an oil derived from the cannabis plant. Nope! It’s made by pressing hemp seeds together until the oil comes out. That might sound like a lot of work, but it’s worth it because hempseed oil does a lot for your body. Let’s look at the Pros of Hemp seed oil.

Pros

Nutrients

Not only is it full of nutrients like iron, calcium, and magnesium, but it also has skin-soothing properties. You can even put hempseed oil directly on your skin!

Skin Conditions

If you have acne or psoriasis, hempseed oil might be able to help you out with its anti-inflammatory effects.

PMS

If you suffer from cramps and other PMS symptoms about once a month, gamma linolenic acid (GLA), one of the acids found in hempseed oil, could help get rid of them.

Cons

  • No CBD
  • While hempseeds are full of nutrients, they don’t contain any CBD. And that means that hempseed oil doesn’t contain any CBD either, no matter how much of the product you use or where you get it from. So if a brand claims it does, run for the hills!
  • Saying hempseed oil is like CBD is like saying water is like ginger ale because they come in clear bottles and look similar. Sure, they might compliment each other well when used together, but they don’t actually have that much in common at all.

Pros and Cons of CBD Gummies

Pros

CBD Gummies are Tasty

You know what’s better than medicine? Candy! You might be surprised by this, but many people say CBD gummies taste better than other CBD products. They might even taste better than regular candy! You can eat them discreetly, so you don’t have to worry about the taste at all—just pop one in your mouth when you need it and chew.

Gummies Last Longer than Topicals

If you have a painful area on your body, you might be tempted to apply a topical cream or lotion to quell the pain. However, these types of products don’t really last long—they begin to wear off shortly after application, so you’ll need to reapply them if you want continued relief. However, suppose you take a gummy instead. In that case, the CBD will likely take effect after 30 min and provide pain relief for longer than the average topical.

Easy to Use

Pop one in your mouth, chew them up and let the effects take hold for several hours. Each gummy will have a precise dosage, so there is no need to get a headache over the dosage calculations.

Cons

  • Take time for the effects
  • Because they have to pass through the digestive system, they can take longer for the effects to kick in.
  • No area- specific targeting. Gummies, unlike topicals, do not target one specific area.

Market Regulation

There is not much to be said for the current state of market regulation at the moment. And while I am pretty sure that will change soon, use these tips for finding the right CBD gummy for you:

Finding the Right CBD Gummy for you

It can be hard to determine what to look for in CBD gummies. A lot of it comes down to personal preference, but we’ve put together this handy guide to help you navigate the market and find the sweet spot for you!

Ingredients: Do they contain other CBD products? What about terpenes? These are two important factors that can affect the quality of your product.

Market regulation: Is your preferred brand held to a certain set of standards? Are they transparent about their source and process? What about their return policy? These things will help ensure the product you choose is well-made and safe.

Effects: Do you need CBD gummies with long-lasting effects, or are you looking for something with faster onset time? If you’re new to CBD, we always recommend starting with a longer-lasting option so you can see how your body reacts without having to wait hours for effects.

How to use Hemp Seed Oil

To optimize the effectiveness of hempseed oil in your diet, try adding it in small amounts to salad dressings or smoothies. While you’re on the lookout for hempseed oil in stores, consider adding hemp protein powder or hemp seeds to your pantry as well!

Why Are People Taking Gummies?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active compound found in hemp and marijuana plants. It has been used for years as a natural remedy for pain, anxiety, depression, inflammation, nausea, and sleep problems.

While CBD doesn’t get you high—it won’t make you feel intoxicated or give you any kind of psychedelic experience—it can help relieve a lot of the symptoms that keep us from feeling our best. So people are taking CBD to help them feel better!

The main reason CBD gummies are so popular is that they’re incredibly easy to use. People who want CBD oil can infuse it into their food or drink, absorb it under their tongue, or rub a topical solution into their skin. But these methods aren’t convenient for everyone. If you’re on the go, at work, or don’t want to deal with the mess of using an oil, you may prefer taking a CBD gummy.

CBD gummies are also portable. You can keep them in your car, purse, or office drawer if you need to take some CBD while you’re out and about or while traveling. They also come in different flavors, so you can opt for fruity treats if you don’t like the taste of the oil itself.

You can also control how much CBD is in each gummy more quickly than with other forms of CBD products. Most gummies come in doses between 5 mg and 30 mg of CBD per piece so that it’s easy to manage your dosage.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What’s the Difference Between CBD and Hemp?

Answer: There’s one glaringly obvious difference between hemp oil and CBD oil. As the name suggests, CBD oil contains CBD, while hemp oil (made from pressing the hemp seeds to extract oil) contains no CBD at all. That’s because the seeds of the hemp plant do not contain any cannabinoids or terpenes while the leaves and stalks (where the CBD oil is extracted) is bursting with these smelly (the good kind of smelly) terpenes and interesting cannabinoids.

Question: Which is Better for Pain, CBD or Hemp?

Answer: Since hemp does not contain any cannabinodis, the only things it can help with will be related to nutrition- since it contains a fair amount of omegas and other healthy nutrients. CBD oil is the one to turn to if you are looking for an alternative option for pain relief. Numerous anecdotal and animal studies suggest this cannabinoid can improve sleep quality, relieve stress and tension, and helping to ease pain and inflammation.

Question: Does Hemp Help With Inflammation?

Answer: Thanks to the omegas in hemp, it can! Various studies have shown that a good intake of omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce excessive inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties are due to the high levels of polyunsaturated fats (omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids) in hemp oil. If you’re looking for an easy way to decrease some of the lingering pain from your workouts or from sitting at a desk all day, consider adding some hemp oil to your diet!

Question: What’s Better, CBD Oil or CBD Gummies?

Answer: CBD gummies are a trendy way to consume CBD, and they’re particularly helpful for folks who don’t like the taste of CBD oil. They also tend to have a faster absorption rate than CBD oil does. CBD oil is a larger molecule and therefore requires more time for the body to break it down. Because of that, CBD oils are better at providing sustained relief over a longer period of time. In fact, studies show that CBD oils tend to last up to 4-6 hours in the body. So, if you’re looking for a more long-lasting treatment, CBD oil might be best.

On the other hand, CBD gummies tend to be smaller molecules that are metabolized much faster by the body. This means they work more quickly and provide immediate relief but also wear off quicker than oils. Typically, this type of product lasts about 3-4 hours before you need to take another dose. If you suffer from sudden bouts of stress or anxiety or have problems sleeping, gummies might be a good option for you.

The Bottom Line

CBD and hemp gummies are often mistaken for one another, but they have a few key differences. Unlike CBD, hemp contains an ingredient known as THC that may cause you to feel high or stoned. Furthermore, the CBD in CBD gummies typically comes from industrial hemp, which is bred from plants that contain minimal THC and can be legally cultivated across all 50 states.

Hemp gummies and CBD gummies are edible gummy products made from hemp oil. The main difference between the two is a simple chemical one: CBD gummies are made with CBD isolate, which means they are 100% THC-free, while hemp gummies are made from whole-plant hemp extract, which may contain a trace amount of THC. Both gummies may also contain other cannabinoids and terpenes derived from the hemp plant.
