Los Angeles, a city that has 4 million people roughly, will soon become the largest city in the U.S. with recreational marijuana.

It was this week that the City Council in Los Angeles voted to license sales in 2018.

The council approved rules to bring in commercial sales and an initiative approved by state voters will have cultivation set to begin in less than a month.

The regulations passed this Wednesday detail where pot can be grown and sold and how businesses will be licensed.

Under the regulations, residential neighborhoods will be for the most part off limits to marijuana businesses. There will be buffer zones set around schools, parks, and libraries.

For a business that wants to be in the marketplace, they will need a local permit before applying for a state license to operate next year.

According to Los Angeles City Council President Herb J. Wesson Jr., “As lawmakers we have a responsibility to reasonably regulate this industry in a manner that is safe, inclusive, and practical.”
