Nevada just became the fifth state to legalize marijuana recreation-ally but don’t think that means you can do what you want with it on the Vegas Strip.

The state’s law has prohibited the smoking of marijuana in public places.

According to a spokesman for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department who spoke to the Los Angeles Times, tourists also need to be aware that they may not be able to use marijuana at many of the hotels along the Strip downtown as none have yet to allow it.

Nevada was one of four in November of last year, next to Maine, Massachusetts, and California, to vote yes for the sale of recreational marijuana. Nevada was the first state out of them to get it regulated and come up with an adult-use marijuana system. Other states are expected to start legal marijuana sales next January.

Recreational sales have already exceeded the expectations of many store owners.

“I’m a very happy with the way sales have gone and continue to go, especially when you consider that the word didn’t really get out ahead of time.” commented Andrew Jolley, the president of the Nevada Dispensary Association as well as a store owner.

“The public really only had a couple of weeks’ notice, whereas Colorado had a full year to prepare.”
