The city of Long Beach in southern California is spending a lot of money on a yearlong public education campaign that would hopefully stop people from driving under the influence of marijuana.

The city’s government’s Health and Human Services Department is planning on spending a $239,000 grant that would teach people to choose against driving high.

Marijuana Education Program Coordinator Morgan Venter commented, “We’re trying to take a very fact-based approach. There’s a lot we don’t know about marijuana’s long-term health impacts on a person. We’re trying to leave the drama out of it.”

It was in January that the city’s City Council voted to assign health department staffers to develop an educational campaign that would address topics that include driving under the influence of the drug.

Councilwoman Suzie Price commented, “We’re hoping the dispensaries will partner with us to display literature at the dispensaries. Marijuana can affect people differently depending on its potency, depending on their tolerance level.”

Long Beach’s city government is already legally allowed to license medical marijuana dispensaries under the terms of a voter-approved law. The state of California will be able to sell recreational marijuana legally starting January 1st.
