Despite recreational marijuana becoming legal in the state of Illinois beginning January 1st, 2020, there will be some residential areas that will not allow the drug.

Unfortunately individuals who are living in public housing won’t be afforded the right to use or even possess cannabis at their place of residence in Illinois. Public housing falls under the federal government purview, where cannabis still remains illegal.

“It also places housing authorities in kind of a difficult situation of in some point in time, it is likely that a housing authority will evict a tenant for possession or use of marijuana, and that may be contested in the courts. And with the state law differing from the federal code of regulations, it remains to be seen how all that will play out,” said Quincy housing authority director Jerry Gille.

Public housing authorities will be able to alter policies to make enforcement not as severe hopefully.
