As the medical marijuana industry flourishes, workers are going to be needed. The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy will be offering training soon to prospective workers for the sector.

The school is one among just a few established universities and colleges that will be offering such a program. Others include the University of Vermont College of Medicine’s Department of Pharmacology.

“We wanted to be there as a resource,” said Magaly Rodriguez de Bittner, a pharmacy professor and executive director of the school’s Center for Innovative Pharmacy Solutions.

The school already started signing up potential workers for training on June 29th.
“If you’re going to be dispensing,” she said, “let’s make sure your staff in trained in best practices to do it safely and effectively.”

Rodriguez de Bittner made it clear that though the institution will offer training, it doesn’t mean that it endorses the drug.

On the Maryland site, 30-hour certification courses are being offered for $450 to $750.

“There is so much out there,” said Rodriguez de Bittner. “We’re trying to partner and provide courses based on the best evidence — as it develops.”
