An official in South Carolina is making it very clear how against marijuana legalization he is. They have called the drug “addictive” and “dangerous.”

The state has seen almost a dozen bills to legalize the drug be introduced to the Legislature and according to recent polls, support is very high. The recent polls have shown that 70 to 75% of people support legalize medicinal marijuana.

“This is an important issue and we need to think long and hard before we dive head first into it,” Attorney General Alan Wilson said at a press conference this week.

According to Wilson, the drug is dangerous and addictive, and he claimed other states that have legalized it have suffered.

“One in six children who use marijuana will become addicted,” Wilson alleged. “In every state that has allowed marijuana for recreational and medical purposes, the black market has grown in that state, not shrunk.”

Wilson is not the only one opposing legalization. Several local sheriffs, including Alex Underwood, of Chester County, Barry Faile, of Lancaster County, and Kevin Tolson, of York County, are also against legislation.

“If it’s medicine it’s medicine. The FDA [Food and Drug Administration] can study it. They can say what the medical purposes are, and I think you’d see movement on the law enforcement side changing,” Tolson explained.

Greenville Police Chief Ken Miller said legalizing the drug for medical reasons would be “reckless and dangerous.”
